About “Airborn”

Sailing toward dawn, the narrator was perched in the crow's nest, acting as the ship's eyes. The journey had been calm so far, with no significant weather encountered. The ship, the Aurora, is an airship that travels hundreds of feet above the ocean, carrying wealthy passengers between cities. Matt Cruse, a cabin boy, feels at home on the ship and believes he is as light as the hydrium gas that powers it. One night, he meets a dying balloonist who speaks of strange creatures in the sky. Later, he meets the balloonist's granddaughter, who helps him realize the creatures are real. The story is an adventure set in a world where airships travel across continents, and mysterious beings float through the skies. The novel is written by Kenneth Oppel, known for the Silverwing trilogy.
