Rafe Khatchadorian, described as a tragic hero, finds that entering sixth grade has not improved his string of gaffes and mistakes. Despite trying his best, everything goes wrong, so he decides to make sixth grade the year of Operation R.A.F.E., a plan to deliberately break every rule in his school's code of conduct, including chewing gum in class, running in hallways, and setting off the fire alarm.
