About “1876”
1876 is the third novel in Gore Vidal's series of historical fiction that challenges traditional views of American history. The story takes place in the year of the nation's centennial and explores the political scandals and secret dealings that shaped the country during this period. The main character, Charles Schermerhorn Schuyler, is the unacknowledged son of Aaron Burr. After years in Europe, he returns to the United States to regain his fortune. He aims to arrange a good marriage for his daughter, the widowed Princess d'Agrigente, and to gain favor with Samuel Tilden, a leading presidential candidate. Through his ambitions and charm, Schuyler and his daughter become involved in the political and social life of a nation in transition.
Praise for “1876”
“Suspenseful and extravagantly decorated. . . . If you think politics are dirty now, you should have witnessed the goings-on a hundred years ago. . . . Impossible to resist.”
“Vidal writes so well that you find yourself holding your breath over something that is a foregone conclusion. . . . Vidal's talent makes the bloated characters of Washington live in a way history books don't.”
