About “Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay”

Lenu and Lila, born in 1944 in a poor Naples neighborhood, take different paths: Lila marries young to the wealthiest man in the neighborhood but soon leaves him, while Elena continues her studies and writes a novel. Though little seems to unite them now, the old neighborhood still calls to them, old customs pull them back, and the weight of their emotions exacts its price.
