About “Bitter End”
"Bitter End" is the first Nero Wolfe mystery novella by Rex Stout, published in the November 1940 issue of The American Magazine. The story is a re-working of Stout's earlier Tecumseh Fox story Bad for Business, which was published later the same year. The novella introduces the character of Nero Wolfe, a brilliant but reclusive detective, and his assistant, Archie Goodwin. The plot revolves around a murder mystery that unfolds through the unique dynamic between Wolfe and Goodwin. The story establishes the foundation for the long-running Nero Wolfe series.
