Amy DeNovo, Lily Rowan's young assistant, asks Archie to find her father. She approaches him in the lobby of Lily's apartment building and says he is the only man she trusts. She has only $2000 to offer. Archie is intrigued but refuses to take the case, as he is loyal to his employer, Nero Wolfe, who would not accept such a low payment. Later, Amy confronts Wolfe directly and reveals she has more money than she previously said. This catches Wolfe's interest, but the case is complicated—she has no photos of her parents and her mother was recently killed in a hit and run. The investigation starts off difficult. This is from a 1968 novel by Rex Stout.
