The U.S.S. Excalibur has been destroyed, and its captain, Mackenzie Calhoun, is gone. The surviving crew members are scattered across the galaxy, trying to rebuild their lives. Dr. Selar, the ship's former medical officer, faces a personal challenge after giving birth to a child. She returns to her Vulcan homeworld to raise the child according to logical principles. However, the child's father, Lieutenant Commander Burgoyne of the Hermat species, disagrees and fights for his parental rights, even by appealing to the authorities of two worlds. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Robin Lefler and her mother visit the planet Risa, where they meet a Starfleet legend.
