About “Miau”
Miau is a novel by Benito Pérez Galdós that follows the middle-low class Villaamil family in 19th century Madrid. The family includes Ramón Villaamil, a former employee of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, his wife doña Pura, his sister-in-law Milagros, his daughter Abelarda, his grandson Luis Cadalso, and his son-in-law Víctor Cadalso. Víctor's wife, Luisa, who has died, was the mother of Luis. The title "Miau" refers to the sound of a cat and also stands for four administrative reforms proposed by Villaamil. Marinaela is another novel by the same author. It tells the story of Marianela, who loses her parents at a young age and is left without family or money. She is happy with her blind friend Pablo, but her life changes when Dr. Golfín arrives in town. Her relationship with Pablo is tested when he no longer depends on her.
