About “Cilka's Journey”
Cilka is sixteen when she is taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1942, where the commandant notices her beauty and forcibly separates her from other women prisoners; she learns that power, even unwillingly taken, equals survival. After liberation, she is charged as a collaborator for sleeping with the enemy and sent to a Siberian prison camp, where she faces new hardships including the unwanted attention of guards, until a kind female doctor takes her under her wing.
