Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste, toiling in the mines beneath the surface of Mars while believing his labor is preparing the planet for human settlement. When he discovers the cruel lie at the heart of his society, he allows himself to be physically and surgically transformed into a Gold, the ruling elite, and infiltrates their brutal academy to dismantle the system from within.
