In a dark future America torn by endless civil wars, orphans Mahlia and Mouse flee the war-torn Drowned Cities. Their fragile escape is short-lived, as danger follows them. Mahlia must take great risks to protect Mouse, who once saved her life. The story follows their struggle for survival in a harsh and unforgiving world. The novel was published in 2012 by Paolo Bacigalupi.
