Slough House is the base for intelligence service members who have failed, including River Cartwright, who spends his days transcribing phone calls. When a young man is kidnapped and threatened with a live beheading online, River sees a chance to prove himself. He must determine if the victim is who he seems and uncover the kidnappers' link to a disgraced journalist.
