A 2014 novel by Jeff VanderMeer follows the secret agency Southern Reach, which has monitored expeditions into Area X, a remote and lush region that has been cut off from civilization for thirty years. After the twelfth expedition, the agency is in chaos, and John Rodriguez becomes the new leader of the team. Through interrogations, hidden notes, and over two hundred hours of disturbing video footage, the mysteries of Area X start to come to light.
