About “How few remain”
In 1883, the United States and the Confederate States of America went to war again, twenty years after the South had won the first Civil War. The conflict began when the U.S. declared war over the annexation of Mexican territory. This new war was fought on a lawless frontier, where blue and gray forces clashed not only with each other but also with the Apache, outlaws, and British troops. France and England supported the South, with blockades and invasions from Canada. Figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Jeb Stuart, Theodore Roosevelt, and George Custer played roles in the conflict. Journalists like Samuel Clemens reported on the war, while military leaders like Stonewall Jackson and George McClellan shaped its course. This alternate history novel by Harry Turtledove explores the changed stakes and battle lines of the Second War Between the States.
