The Hortas of Janus VI are renowned galaxy miners, able to burn through rock as easily as humans move through air. They are brought in to help rebuild Bajor's mining industry, offering hope for the planet's economy. However, when Cardassian raiders capture the Mother Horta, Commander Sisko is left with twenty Horta eggs. As the eggs hatch, a group of newborn Hortas becomes a threat to Deep Space Nine. While Major Kira leads a rescue mission into Cardassian space, Sisko must deal with the growing danger posed by the uncontrollable and destructive young Hortas.
