The Enterprise is called to the Federation Outpost Tanis for a class one medical emergency. Upon arrival, the crew finds two of the outpost's three researchers dead, their bodies nearly drained of blood. No clues, no records, and no evidence of the researchers' work remain. The only survivor is Doctor Jeffrey Adams, who hides a secret that could shake Starfleet. His condition brings a deadly hunger that threatens the entire crew of the Enterprise.
