Sparkling like a three-dimensional snowflake in the depths of space, Gemworld was once a Federation marvel, home to six alien races living in peace on an artificial world made entirely of crystal. However, the planet's crystal began multiplying uncontrollably, leading to its destruction. The Starship Enterprise and the entire planet face total collapse. To stop the disaster, the force fields holding Gemworld's atmosphere must be turned off, requiring the cooperation of its six alien civilizations, one of which was responsible for the crisis. Captain Picard and his crew, including Lieutenant Barclay, must travel across the dying planet to unite the chief engineers of various alien races. They also face a mass murderer determined to destroy the world.
