The USS Enterprise travels to Lorca, a planet with a feudal culture where people wear masks to indicate their rank. Captain Picard and an away team wear masks to start a mission to find the planet's ruler and the Wisdom Mask, a symbol of leadership. Their goal is to build diplomatic ties. Soon after arriving, Picard's group loses contact with the ship, prompting Commander Riker to lead a search party to locate them. Unbeknownst to them, the entire mission is part of a madman's scheme. He plans to trap both the Enterprise landing parties and take control of the Wisdom Mask and the planet.
