The USS Enterprise answers a distress call and discovers the damaged alien vessel Freedom, crewed by the Vemlans. Their captain, Jared, asks for help repairing the ship, which Picard and his crew agree to provide. However, their efforts are interrupted when a Vemlan fleet arrives, claiming Jared and his crew are escaped slaves and their property. As Jared and his people beg for protection and freedom, Picard faces a moral dilemma between his conscience and the Prime Directive.
