Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise are sent to the planet Rakatan after a covert Elasian mining operation disrupts a Federation geological expedition. The Elasian Dohlman asserts ownership of the planet and its dilithium deposits, while the geologists warn that mining near Rakatan Mons, the galaxy's largest stratovolcano, could lead to a catastrophic eruption. Lieutenant Commander Uhura and a landing party investigate the Dohlman's claim, but tensions between the Elasians and the geologists escalate. As the situation worsens, a hostile Elasian armada arrives, and a massive volcanic explosion threatens all involved, forcing the Enterprise to act to prevent disaster.
