The Enterprise is on a peaceful mission at Starbase 12 when a strange cosmic event causes a Klingon ship to disappear, taking Spock with it. Spock's final message from the Klingon ship is unclear and alarming. The Klingons are traveling back in time to find a man who holds a crucial secret about the future. Their goal is to kill him, which would alter history and lead to the Federation's destruction. The story is based on a 1985 novel by Barbara Hambly.
