About “The Better Man”
The 1994 novel by Howard Weinstein follows the starship Enterprise as it transports a Federation ambassador to the planet Empyrea, a colony of genetically perfected humans. The ambassador, once a close friend of Dr. McCoy, is now his bitter rival. Upon arriving, McCoy discovers Anna, a daughter he never knew he had. He learns that the Empyreans must not find out she is the daughter of an off-worlder and that her genes are not "perfect." As tensions rise, McCoy must find a way to protect Anna from the severe consequences her planet would impose.
