Through three centuries of interstellar travel, intelligent alien life had never been encountered—until now. When a scientific team exploring an obscure planet fails to make a regular communication check, the Marines of third platoon are sent to investigate. They expect a routine rescue operation but find a horrifying situation on Society 437. Only a few pirates who were in the wrong place at the wrong time have survived, and there is little evidence of the scientists. Gunnery Sergeant Bass and his men must uncover what happened to the scientists and why the pirates were spared.
