Before becoming the captain of the USS Enterprise, Cadet Jean-Luc Picard struggles through his first year at the Academy. He is near the top of his class, just behind Roger Wells, and is determined to outdo him. However, he faces personal doubts and a strained relationship with his father, worsened by a lack of communication. Jean-Luc and his friend Marta are selected for a real training mission with the Nova Command team, traveling through the solar system. Tension grows between Jean-Luc and Roger. When the mission leader falls ill and a distress call is received, the cadets must decide whether to follow orders or attempt a rescue as the ship faces disaster. The story is from a 1995 novel by Brad Strickland and Barbara Strickland.
