About “The Heart of Midlothian”

The Heart of Mid-Lothian is the seventh of Sir Walter Scott's Waverley Novels. It was first published in four volumes on 25 July 1818, under the title Tales of My Landlord, 2nd series, with the author listed as "Jedediah Cleishbotham, Schoolmaster and Parish-clerk of Gandercleugh." The story takes place between September 1736 and May 1737 and begins with the Porteous Riots in Edinburgh. A working-class girl embarks on a journey from Edinburgh to London to secure a royal commutation of her sister's death penalty, which was imposed for allegedly murdering her newborn baby. Although it received some negative reviews at the time, some readers now regard it as Scott's finest novel. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
