The Temeraire series by Naomi Novik is a sequence of nine alternate history fantasy novels published between 2006 and 2016, beginning with His Majesty's Dragon, which introduces Captain William Laurence and his dragon, Temeraire. Set during the Napoleonic Wars, the narrative reimagines the period with dragons serving as a central element of military aviation, forming an air force operated by human aviators. The stories follow the partnership between Laurence and Temeraire as they engage in military campaigns, diplomatic missions, and global travel across multiple continents. The series explores themes of loyalty, duty, and the evolving relationship between humans and dragons within a structured military and political framework, set against historical events and settings while incorporating fantastical elements. The first three novels were later compiled into the omnibus volume Temeraire: In the Service of the King. The series was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Series in 2017.
