About “Tai-Pan”
Tai-Pan is a 1966 novel by James Clavell set in 1842, following the end of the First Opium War. It focuses on European and American traders who establish themselves in Hong Kong. The story centers on the fictional Struan family and their struggles in this new environment. The central conflict is between Dirk Struan and Tyler Brock, two men competing for power and influence. As part of Clavell's Asian Saga, Tai-Pan is the second novel in the series but the first to feature the Struan family.
