About “Folly and Glory”

The final chapter of the story takes place in Mexican Santa Fe, where Tasmin and her family are under arrest. Her father, Lord Berrybender, plans to move the family to Texas with a group of retainers. Tasmin, once devoted to her husband Jim Snow, now feels uncertain about her future and her relationship with him. Captain Clark, known from the Lewis and Clark expedition, is also confused by the rapid changes in the West. Meanwhile, Jim Snow travels to New Orleans with Kit Carson and meets Juppy, an illegitimate son of Lord Berrybender. Despite their efforts, the Berrybenders are forced on a harsh journey across the desert to Vera Cruz. After suffering from hunger and thirst and fighting slavers, they reach New Orleans. Jim must choose between Tasmin and the American plains, while Tasmin must decide where her future lies.
