Malcolm Polstead is a keen observer who often goes unnoticed. He lives with his father at the Trout, an inn on the river Thames, where many people pass through. Malcolm and his daemon, Asta, often hear gossip and secrets. One winter, Malcolm finds a secret message about a dangerous substance called Dust. A spy finds him instead and asks him to watch for a girl named Lyra. Malcolm starts seeing strange people, including Lord Asriel, agents from the Magisterium, a gyptian named Coram, and a woman with a monkey daemon. All are looking for Lyra. Lyra has a powerful effect on people, and Malcolm is determined to keep her safe. La Belle Sauvage is the first book in the Book of Dust trilogy, set in the same world as His Dark Materials. It was published in 2017 by Phillip Pullman.
