Drought has struck the prehistoric world of the Named, a group of intelligent cats led by Ratha, who seeks new grazing land for their herd beasts. Meanwhile, on the coast, a young wild cat named Newt struggles to survive after being rejected by the languageless unnamed cats. She forms a bond with a group of docile sea mammals. Thakur, a scout for the Named, finds Newt and is impressed by her resourcefulness. He does not know that Newt and Ratha share a hidden connection. The story explores themes of survival, belonging, and unexpected ties. The novel was written by Clare Bell in 1990.
