About “La Cousine Bette”
Poor, plain spinster Bette survives on the condescending patronage of her socially superior Paris relatives: her beautiful cousin Adeline, the philandering Baron Hulot, and their daughter Hortense. Already resentful of their wealth, Bette becomes consumed by a desire for revenge when she learns the man she loves plans to marry Hortense, and dedicates herself to destroying the Hulot family through patient, silent malice. The novel is part of Balzac's Comedie humaine.
