The Conclave of Shadows has defeated the Nighthawks, ending their plot to destroy the Empire of Great Kesh through civil war. However, the victory is short-lived as the mad sorcerer Leso Varen has taken refuge with the Magicians of the Assembly on Kelewan. A new threat emerges as the Dasati, known as the most vicious warriors in the universe, prepare to attack both Kelewan and Midkemia. The great sorcerer Pug fears there is no power strong enough to stop them. He must travel to another realm of reality to find a way to defeat the Dasati. Pug is joined by Magnus, Nakor, and a mysterious young man named Bek, whose dangerous strength and bloodlust hint at hidden secrets. They must face the darkest place they have ever known to save their world from destruction.
