The Dominion, led by the Jem'Hadar and Changelings, has formed an alliance with the Cardassian military and taken control of Deep Space Nine. Starfleet is locked in a desperate war against the Dominion and the Klingon Empire. The Enterprise-E is on the Cardassian border, preparing for an impending attack. Captain Jean-Luc Picard reunites with Ro Laren, a former Starfleet officer who defected to the Maquis. She warns that the Dominion is building an artificial wormhole behind enemy lines, which would allow them to bypass the Bajoran wormhole and bring reinforcements into the Alpha Quadrant.
