The Phoenix Unchained is the first novel in a new series set 1000 years after the events of the Obsidian Mountain trilogy. It features a new cast of characters, with only brief appearances by Jermayan and Idalia, and the continued presence of the dragon Ancaladar. The series is part of a larger universe that includes mythological creatures and multiple types of magic. High Magic and Wild Magic are used by the protagonists, while Dark Magic is practiced by the Endarkened, a race of demons. Wildmages have access to the "Three books of Wild Magic" and must pay physical and MagePrices for their spells. Knight-Mages are a specialized form of Wildmage focused on warfare. High Mages use ritualized magic that requires extensive training. Elvenmages are similar to Wildmages, and Dark Mages are those who have been tainted by the Endarkened. The Endarkened use magic that feeds on suffering and death. Mages can bond with dragons, except for Dark Mages, who force the bond.
