About “The Pit”

The Pit is a literary critique of capitalism in the United States at the turn of the century. It follows an obsessed trader who attempts to corner the wheat market, highlighting the destructive nature of unchecked greed. The novel was the second part of Frank Norris's planned trilogy, The Epic of the Wheat, which included The Octopus as the first part. Norris did not complete the third novel in the series.
