Morn Hyland is an ex-police officer for the United Mining Companies and the target of two powerful men, Nick Succorso and Angus Thermopyle. Both see her as a prize, but Morn refuses to be anyone's possession. She is caught in a dangerous game between the two men, who are rivals in the world of ore-piracy. Meanwhile, the Amnion, an alien race, lurk in Forbidden Space. They have a terrible desire from humanity and are willing to do anything to achieve it. The novel explores the conflict between human characters and the terrifying presence of the Amnion.
