About “Andromache”
In Andromache, Euripides challenges traditional ideas of tragic character and structure. The play is set after the Trojan War, with Andromache, a Trojan princess, serving as a concubine to Neoptolemus, son of Achilles. She has a son, Molossus, and is haunted by memories of her husband, Hector, and their son, Astyanax, who were killed by the Greeks. Andromache and her son are threatened with death by Hermione, Neoptolemus' wife, who is jealous because she cannot have children. The conflict between the women is mirrored in the clash between Peleus, who supports Andromache, and Menelaus, who backs Hermione. The play combines realism with supernatural elements, creating a complex and emotionally charged narrative.
