About “Stands a shadow”
The Holy Matriarch of Mann, still grieving the death of her son, leads her troops on a mission to the Mercian Free Ports. Her goal is to conquer the city of Bar-Khos, which has resisted her forces for ten years. Ash, an old Roshun warrior, seeks vengeance against her for past crimes, though his quest is personal rather than part of a Roshun vendetta. Meanwhile, Che, the Matriarch’s diplomat and assassin, begins to question the beliefs he has followed. As the battle for Bar-Khos begins, several individuals are affected: Bahn leaves his home to protect the city, Bull sees an opportunity to atone for his past, and Curl, a young prostitute, seeks her own form of justice. As the two armies clash, the outcome depends not on strength alone, but on the inner struggles of those involved, particularly one man’s search for redemption.
