Eriol arrives on the 'Lonely Island' in mythical prehistoric England and stays at the "Cottage of Lost Play," owned by elves Lindo and Vairë. They share stories of the 'Cottage of Children,' a place for lost children, and the history of the island. Eriol learns about the "Music of the Ainur," a creation myth involving spirits who sing the world into existence. Some spirits become caretakers, forming the Valor and the Maia. He also hears about the evil spirit who opposes the world and the creation of Valinor, a place for the good spirits. Eriol seeks the queen's permission to stay and is told the story of "The Chaining of Melko," about the evil spirit's imprisonment. He later hears about the creation of the Elves and the city of Kôr, where the Silmarillion jewels are made. Lindo tells "The Theft of Melko and the Darkening of Valinor," describing how Melko destroys the Trees of Light. The story continues with "The Flight of the Noldoli," about elves who leave Valinor. A guest tells "The Tale of the Sun and Moon," explaining how the sun and moon were placed in the sky. Lindo shares "The Hiding of Valinor," about the secret location of the land. A new guest tells "Gilfanon's Tale," about the Noldoli and the coming of men. The collection of stories concludes with "The Book of Lost Tales: Part II."
