The fifth volume of the twelve-volume series The History of Middle-earth, edited by Christopher Tolkien. At the end of 1937, J.R.R. Tolkien set aside his elaborated work on the myths and legends of Valinor and Middle-earth to begin The Lord of the Rings; this volume completes the presentation of his writing on those themes up to that point, including later versions of the Annals of Valinor and Annals of Beleriand, an amplified Silmarillion, a new map, the myth of the Music of the Ainur as a separate work, the legend of the Downfall of Numenor, the abandoned time-travel story The Lost Road, the essay The Lhammas on Middle-earth's languages, and an etymological dictionary of Elvish vocabulary.
