About “Gobseck”

Gobseck is a novella written by French author Honoré de Balzac, part of the Scènes de la vie privée section of his larger work La Comédie humaine. It was first published in 1830 in two different forms. An outline version appeared in La Mode in March 1830 under the title l'Usurier, and a full version was published in Le Voleur in August 1830. The novella was later included in a volume titled Les Dangers de l'inconduite in 1830. It was republished under the title Papa Gobseck in 1835 and finally given its definitive title, Gobseck, in the 1842 Furne edition of La Comédie humaine.
