About “Les Proscrits”
Les Proscrits is a short story by Honoré de Balzac, published in 1831 by éditions Gosselin and later in 1846 by Furne, Dubochet, Hetzel in Études philosophiques. Balzac subtitled it an esquisse historique. The story is part of Livre Mystique, which also includes Louis Lambert and Séraphîta. It shares themes with Louis Lambert, particularly the theory that intelligence takes different forms, ranging from animal to angelic, and the idea that angels live among humans. The story reflects Balzac’s interest in philosophical and spiritual ideas. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
