About “The nightmare stacks”
"The Laundry Files" is a fast-paced blend of espionage, office comedy, and Lovecraftian horror. In this 2016 novel by Charles Stross, a day trader named Alex Schwartz stumbles upon the algorithm that transformed him and his colleagues into vampires. He is then recruited by The Laundry, Britain's secret counter-occult agency. Alex must now work as an operative-in-training, despite his dependency on his employers for survival. His first assignment takes him to his hometown of Leeds, where he is tasked with assessing the costs of renovating a Cold War bunker into The Laundry's new headquarters. Alex struggles with the challenge of informing his parents about his new career while concealing his undead condition. His only support is Cassie Brewer, a drama student and participant in the local Goth Festival who is drawn to him despite his awkwardness and need for sunblock. Cassie, however, has her own secrets that make Alex's situation seem ordinary in comparison.
