In the years following the Yellowstone eruption, economic chaos and mass migration to the Long Earth worlds create a desperate situation. Sally, Joshua, and Lobsang are involved in rescue efforts when Sally is contacted by her father, Willis Linsay, the inventor of the Stepper device. He invites her on a voyage across the Long Mars, but his true intentions are unclear. Meanwhile, U.S. Navy Commander Maggie Kauffman leads an expedition to the outer limits of the Long Earth. Joshua deals with the growing conflict involving the Next, intelligent post-humans from Happy Landings, who face fear and hostility from society. Tensions rise as the situation threatens to erupt into violence.
