Miriam, a tech journalist from Boston, discovers she has relatives in an alternate world in The Family Trade. These relatives belong to an elite family, and she becomes known as Lady Helge. To avoid danger, she uses modern business practices and scientific knowledge in a trade system run by mercantilists. Her actions have unexpected effects on three different timelines, including a quasi-Victorian one used by the hidden family. The Merchant Princes is Charles Stross's most ambitious science fiction saga. The first novel in the series was published in 2005.
