Retreat of the Resurrection is a 1999 novel by Peter F. Hamilton. It is set in a future where an interstellar war is fought using exorcism as the only weapon. The Confederation collapses into anarchy as wealthy worlds decide to sacrifice most of humanity to the risen dead souls from the Beyond. At the same time, the Possessed—those controlled by these souls—destroy planets as they search for Heaven in a transdimensional journey. The novel explores the consequences of this desperate quest, revealing that the pursuit of paradise may be the greatest mistake the Possessed could make.
