In the galaxy's distant future, humans are one of three known intelligent races alongside the Ildirans, ruled by their Mage-Imperator, and the vanished Klikiss, who left behind advanced technology. Humans use a Klikiss device to turn a gaseous supergiant planet into a new sun, but this awakens a previously unsuspected fourth race, the Hydrogues, triggering a galaxy-spanning war.
