Fawn Bluefield, a young woman longing for a life beyond her family's farm, is stopped by a patrol of Lakewalkers—nomadic soldier-sorcerers from the northern woodlands. These feared warriors, who use knives made of human bone, fight a secret war against the malices, immortal beings that drain life from humans and animals. Fawn is captured by a malice, and it is Dag, a Lakewalker burdened by past sorrow and duty, who rescues her. Their victory comes at a heavy cost, binding their fates together as they begin a journey filled with danger, discovery, and the possibility of partnership and love. The story follows their path through conflict and connection.
