Young Will Parker and his friends embark on a dangerous journey to reach an outpost of freedom, hoping to escape the Tripods—alien rulers who capture and control adult humans. The story is the first in the Tripods trilogy, written by John Christopher, a pseudonym for author Sam Youd. The novel is set on a planet under alien domination and follows the struggles of young people trying to resist control. A prequel, When the Tripods Came, was published 20 years later. The series includes three other books: The City of Gold and Lead, The Pool of Fire, and the prequel. The 1967 novel is a science fiction story aimed at young adults.
