This is the 1994 entry in The Twelve Kingdoms, a fantasy novel series by Japanese author Fuyumi Ono, illustrated by Akihiro Yamada. The series began with Sea of Shadow, published by Kodansha in Japan in 1992, with the last Kodansha volume in 2001; it resumed in 2012 under Shinchosha's Shinchō Bunko line, which also reprinted older volumes with new art.
